A west-facing flat on the Ajman Corniche takes the full afternoon glare off the water, and by August a thin sheer alone will not keep the room cool or the sofa from fading. Most homes here end up on a double track: a sheer for daytime privacy and a lined blackout behind it for the heat and for sleeping past sunrise. Get the blackout layer overlapping the frame properly and the difference in the bedroom is immediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there is the wall, which is where most DIY attempts in Ajman come undone. A lot of the older housing stock in Al Nuaimiya, Al Rashidiya and Al Rumailah is hollow block finished with a thin plaster skim. The plastic plug that came in the box has nothing to grip: it turns in the void, the bracket sags, and one morning the whole rail is on the floor with a chunk of plaster still attached. That wall needs a toggle or a chemical fixing, not optimism and a cordless screwdriver.
