Two things sink a curtain job in Dubai, and neither of them is the curtain. The first is the building: most towers want a work permit, a copy of the contractor\u2019s trade licence and insurance, and drilling restricted to set hours on weekdays. Turn up with a drill and no paperwork and security will stop you at reception with the curtains still in the bag. The second is the window. In Marina, Downtown, Business Bay and JVC the glass runs floor to ceiling, and there is frequently no wall above it to fix a rail to at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check the building before you check the fabric. Most managed towers in Dubai \u2014 Marina, JLT, Downtown, Business Bay, JVC, Dubai Hills \u2014 require a work permit before a contractor drills a single hole, along with the company\u2019s trade licence and insurance, and many restrict drilling to weekday working hours so the neighbours are not woken on a Saturday. It is a day of paperwork, not a week, but it is the reason so many curtain jobs get postponed at the last minute. Then look up. In a modern Dubai apartment the glass usually runs from the floor to the ceiling, which is beautiful and completely useless for hanging a curtain: there is no wall above the frame. The rail has to go into the concrete slab, or into the gypsum bulkhead that boxes in the AC duct \u2014 and that bulkhead is hollow board, not masonry. A line blackout curtain screw into 12 millimeters of gypsum will tear out and take a strip of ceiling with it. The right answer is a rate ceiling anchor, or moving the fixing back to the slab, or using the curtain pocket the developer already built into the ceiling, in which case the track disappears entirely and the fabric looks like it grows out of the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where you do have a wall \u2014 villas in Arabian Ranches, The Springs, Mirdif, Al Barsha and the older Jumeirah and Bur Dubai buildings \u2014 the geometry rule is simple: fix the rail ten to fifteen centimetres above the window and run it fifteen to twenty centimetres past each side, so the curtain stacks clear of the glass when open and seals the edges when closed. And think about the sun: a west-facing Marina or JBR apartment takes the full afternoon glare off the water, so most homes end up on a double track, a sheer for daytime privacy and a lined blackout behind it for the heat and for sleeping past sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
